My Son and Me was inspired by a drawing by Elvis Grahovac’s six-year-old son, Gabriel, who is also on the Autism Spectrum. While showing the drawing to his father, Gabriel explained that it depicted the devil. He shared a poignant backstory: the devil was once a good person who had been unjustly killed by a group acting on orders. After this tragic event, the good person transformed into the devil, a change that Gabriel believed was irreversible. When asked if redemption was possible for this figure, Gabriel firmly said there was none—the transformation was permanent.

Elvis was deeply moved by his son’s story and began a personal reflection that ultimately shaped the creation of My Son and Me. The artwork explores themes of morality, redemption, and the nature of pure goodness and love. Elvis believes that goodness and love have no limits. Even when he imagines an entirely evil person, he feels compassion and holds onto the possibility of forgiveness. He cannot reconcile the idea of someone being condemned to eternal darkness, floating infinitely without a body—what he considers the ultimate punishment.

This notion of hell, drawn from Elvis’s own experiences during epileptic seizures, has significantly influenced his artistic vision. Darkness, as a recurring theme in his work, serves as a metaphor for isolation and the unknown. For Elvis, death symbolizes the departure of pure awoken consciousness – without the burden of ego – from the body to a collective where I is eternal.

My Son and I encapsulates these profound ideas, blending personal experiences with universal questions about morality, redemption, and the enduring power of compassion.
