In Flora to Fauna, Elvis Grahovac envisions a world where the boundaries between plant, animal, and human life dissolve, emphasizing the deep interconnection of all living beings. At the center of the composition, three figures stand—one female, one male, and between them, a futuristic, androgynous being that embodies both genders and neither at the same time. These figures, like all the other creatures in the artwork, exist in a liminal space between flora and fauna, blurring the line between the two.
Their brains serve as the roots for flowers that bloom from their heads, symbolizing thought, growth, and organic consciousness. Meanwhile, their feet merge into an underground world of fungi, connecting them to the unseen, symbiotic networks of nature. They are sexual beings, not in the limited human sense, but as part of a universal cycle of life, creation, and transformation.
Surrounding them, other creatures continue this theme—bodies sprouting roots, flowering beings that exist somewhere between plants and animals, merging into the ground as they, too, grow and evolve. This imagery reinforces the idea that humans are not separate from nature but deeply woven into it. Like everything else, we return to the earth, becoming the soil that nourishes new life—trees, flowers, and organisms that continue the endless cycle of existence.
Flora to Fauna invites us to reconsider our place in the natural world. Consciousness may set us apart, but it does not elevate us above nature. There is still so much we do not understand about the silent, intricate relationships between flora, fauna, and the unseen forces that sustain all life.
