In Libido, Elvis Grahovac explores the complex and often repressed nature of human sexuality through a striking interplay of fiery hues—gold, yellow, orange, and deep reds—colors that evoke both the consuming force of fire and the realm of demons. These tones create a visceral atmosphere, symbolizing the way desire is often framed as dangerous, untamed, and in need of control.

The Demon of Desire

At the center of the composition, a hormone takes the form of a demon—an embodiment of the rigid, traditional perception of sexuality as something forbidden, sinful, and taboo. This entity does not merely exist but actively exerts influence, gripping and manipulating the brain, illustrating the internalized struggle between natural impulses and societal conditioning.

The Chaos of Passion

Surrounding this central figure, the painting unfolds into a chaotic tapestry of imagery, representing an array of thoughts, desires, fantasies, fetishes, and urges. These elements traverse the full spectrum of human passion, from intimate connections to the shadowed corners of the subconscious—ideas of pleasure, choice, control, perversion, and moral judgment all coexist within the composition.

Libido challenges the conventional notion of “healthy sexuality” as dictated by public opinion and cultural norms. It forces the viewer to confront the boundaries between repression and liberation, exploring how deeply ingrained beliefs shape personal and collective attitudes toward desire. By daring to visualize what is often left unspoken, the work invites reflection on the ever-present tension between instinct and imposed morality.
